Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh the story of the flood and how he and his wife became immortal. Gilgamesh is determined to achieve immortality and asks Utnapishtim how he can do so. Utnapishtim tells him about a plant that has the power to restore youth, but it is guarded by a snake and can only be found at the bottom of the sea.

The Lesson of the Epic

Gilgamesh retrieves the plant but loses it to a snake while he is bathing. He realizes that immortality is not for him and that he must come to terms with his own mortality. The epic ends with Gilgamesh returning to Uruk, a wiser and more compassionate king, who has learned the value of friendship, love, and the importance of living in the present.
